Prodigy

Prodigy is the name of my new journey in 2022. It is the culmination of my life long journey of learning and the past 10 years of a very important part of my life.

The definition of ‘prodigy’ that fits this new journey is: a young person with exceptional qualities or abilities.

And this year I have become fully responsible for the education of my only daughter. That’s not to say I haven’t always been responsible and committed to her education. I have been solely responsible for her entire upbringing thus far. However, at the beginning of 2022 we chose to take this a step further and officially complete the necessary requirement to gain an exemption to home educate her.

My daughter is turning 10 this year, and though I haven’t publicly shared about her until now, you’ll probably notice a lot of similarities between us. She calls herself my prodigy, and decided that’s what we would call our “homeschool”. That’s both humbling and also imparts the weight of the responsibility.

Here in New Zealand you need to apply to the Ministry of Education for an exemption to home educate, otherwise children must be enrolled in a registered school from the age of 6.
Our home education exemption was granted on the 20th of April 2022 and we are thrilled to be on this path.

As with all things – home education is unique to the families that choose to follow that path.

So, here I’ll share some of the resources we use, and some of the stories of the adventures we have.
